Advances in Display Technology: From Pixels to Perception

Abstract

Electronic displays have become a part of everyday life. A diversity of display technologies has evolved to support a wide range of applications including television receivers, computer monitors, cell phones, PDAs, automobile dashboards, aircraft instruments, and even in-car and in-flight entertainment systems. The proliferation of display technologies with vastly different operating principles, imaging characteristics and functional limitations presents both opportunities and challenges for application-specific display system development. In all market segments and applications, expectations for display performance have grown at a rapid pace, driving not only the accelerated development of core display technologies but also supporting control algorithms and image processing methodology. Although some enhancements of display performance tend to be focused on the application, there are general trends toward improved spatial and temporal resolution, higher dynamic range and expanded color gamuts. In this presentation, I review the latest advances in displays in each major application market and focus on those developments which result in enhanced functional performance and improved image quality.
