What is RSS?
RSS is a simple file format for representing news-like items. It is based on XML. RSS files are called "feeds" because they are often used for frequently-changing material like news articles. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.
How do I use RSS feeds?
RSS feeds can be displayed with programs called "RSS aggregators" or "RSS readers." Search the web for examples.
With appropriate auxiliary code, web sites can display RSS feeds. Journal of Vision encourages free use of its feeds in this way.
Some web browsers are able to directly display RSS feeds (e.g., Safari on Mac OS X).
In the Firefox browser on Mac OS X, you can add a feed as a "Live Bookmark."
- Select menu Bookmarks: Manage Bookmarks.
- Click on something inside Bookmarks Toolbar Folder.
- Select menu File:New Live Bookmark.
- Enter the URL (e.g. http://journalofvision.org/rss/last10.xml) and a useful name (e.g. "jov-rss").
- Close the windows.
- You should now have a new Live Bookmark called "jov-rss."
In the OmniWeb browser on Mac OS X, it is even easier to get a live bookmark. Just click on an RSS link, and a dialog opens that asks you where to keep the bookmark.
